Invitation to Attend: Virtual 2021 SOT Annual Meeting and ToxExpo

Explore New Research, Discoveries, and Processes Related to Toxicology and Drug Development

This blog is being shared as part of a blog exchange between SPS and the Society of Toxicology.

By: George P. Daston, PhD, 2020–2021 SOT President

Later this month, the Society of Toxicology (SOT) will feature hours of scientific presentations devoted to drug discovery and safety during the Virtual 2021 SOT Annual Meeting and ToxExpo, and I would like to invite the Safety Pharmacology Society (SPS) members to attend the SOT meeting to learn about the latest toxicological advances in this area.

Scientific Sessions on Drug Discovery Topics

Taking place virtually March 12–26, the SOT meeting includes six Scientific Sessions endorsed by the Society’s Drug Discovery Toxicology Specialty Section:

  • Application of Computational Genomic Approaches to Address Toxicity Mechanisms and Prediction (Symposium Session)
  • Bile Acids Profiling as Biomarkers for Hepatobiliary Toxicity and Disease (Workshop Session)
  • Controlling the Message: Safely Navigating the Development of Novel Oligonucleotide Therapeutics (Symposium Session)
  • Industrial Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Toxicology (Symposium Session)
  • Safety Assessment: Pharmaceutical—Drug Discovery (Poster Session)
  • Using Human Genetics to Aid in Safety Assessment of Therapeutics (Workshop Session)

In addition, the Merit Award Lecture by Norbert E. Kaminski, PhD, will explore “Unraveling the Molecular Mechanisms of Cannabinoid-Mediated Immune Modulation and Cannabinoid Receptor 2 as a Putative Therapeutic Target,” while seven Exhibitor-Hosted Sessions will offer insights on products and research related to drug discovery.

Continuing Education Opportunities

For those looking to secure continuing education (CE) credits, four of the 2021 courses—available for an add-on fee—will focus on drug discovery:

  • CE01: Chemical Probes: New Tools to Identify Molecular Targets
  • CE08: Guidelines for Developing and Implementing Organ-on-a-Chip/Microphysiological Systems for Toxicity Evaluation of Drug Candidates in Drug Development
  • CE09: Navigating New Modalities: A Preclinical Roadmap for Developing a Novel Oligonucleotide Safety Strategy
  • CE11: Establishing Confidence in Organ-on-a-Chip Systems for Toxicity Testing: Lung-on-a-Chip as an Example

All scientific content will be available during scheduled presentations and as on-demand offerings through May 31, 2021. To peruse the complete scientific program and other meeting activities, use the SOT Online Planner.

Other SOT Meeting Features, Including Networking

Beyond the scientific explorations, the Virtual 2021 SOT Annual Meeting and ToxExpo will feature dedicated spaces for networking and social engagement, allowing attendees to connect with friends and colleagues, develop new partnerships, and engage in mentoring and career development. Online chats, live Q&As, and small-group video meetings are just some of the opportunities available to the SOT Virtual Meeting participants.

I hope you will join SOT for its Annual Meeting and ToxExpo to discover the latest advances in drug safety and testing. Registration will remain open throughout the meeting and the on-demand window.
